Keith Robinson started Souris River Canoes in September 1985. The first Manufacturing facility was located on the banks of the Souris River in southwestern Manitoba. The company continued in Souris until it moved in July 1992 to Atikokan, Ontario. Atikokan was chosen mostly for its close proximity to Quetico Park which — along with the Boundary Waters Canoe Area — formsthe largest protected canoe area the world.
From the beginning, much time and energy has been spent on research and development. The focus has been on trying to find materials and a resin stiffening system that would produce an incredibly lightweight and tough canoe. Like all good research work, the process has required a great deal of time, patience, and perseverance but these efforts have resulted in some astonishing discoveries: the development of R.E.S. Technology®, Kevlar®/Epoxy, Duralight®, and a revolutionary Flexible Rib System for stiffening the hulls of our canoes.
