Fabric and Colour Options
Woven Colour
Imagine a green canoe which, when impacted, doesn’t have its colour scrape off or
flake off, as so often happens with gel-coated and painted canoes. The reason this
doesn’t happen with the woven colour canoe is because our colours are enclosed within
the laminate. The outer layer is actually a coloured fabric.
This unique idea from Souris River Canoes eliminates
the six to eight extra pounds
of weight our
competitors must add to their canoe hulls to
provide a colour option.
Our competitors’ gel-coated or painted canoes give
you an attractive show-room finish,
but this benefit
hardly justifies the sacrifices made so that those
canoes can still
be “ultra-light”. The most common
tradeoff is giving up fabric strength to compensate
for the weight of the gel-coat. Most other
manufacturers build their ultra-light
canoes with one
and even two fewer layers of fabric than you’ll find
in a Souris
River Canoe.
Souris River uses four layers of fabric in every canoe
we build and that’s four full
non-seamed layers
everywhere, bottom and sides. As a result, our woven colour canoes
are beautiful and lightweight and strong. They are much more resilient than gel coated
canoes because, apart from being heavy, gel-coat is also brittle and when impacted
will often star-crack and peel off. This won’t happen to a woven colour hull as a
Souris River Canoe woven colour will simply flex and bounce away on impact. Surprisingly,
many scratches will become less visible or virtually disappear when wiped with a
rag and a bit of common urethane varnish.
Our woven colour canoes are all manufactured using epoxy resin as the bonding agent,
so they possess the same incredible toughness as you’ll find in our clear models.
Le Tigre
Our most popular selling canoe colour in the last few years has been our Le Tigre
design. Unique to Souris River Canoes, this innovative pattern simply exceeded all
of our expectations in customer appeal since its introduction in early 2000. The
striped black and gold Kevlar with its unique logo can be seen everywhere canoes
are paddled these days. In construction, a Le Tigre is identical to our conventional
Kevlar hull in all ways. The pattern on the outer layer of cloth is what gives Le
Tigre its distinctive appearance. Check one out at your nearest Souris River Canoes
dealer. We’re sure you will love the cosmetic effect. The incredible canoe beneath
is your bonus.
