Trim Options

Trim Options

Standard Aluminum Trim Aluminum trim is standard on all models. This trim is very durable, requires no maintenance, and hides scuffs and scrapes well.

Optional Black Aluminum Trim Black aluminum trim is available as an option. Like the bare aluminum, this stunning finish is also durable and requires no maintenance.

Optional Wood Trim Wood trim is also available as an extra cost option. This adds a beautiful finish to your canoe (see photo above), but it will add some weight, and require periodic maintenance.

    Sliding Bow Seat Canoe Option
Sliding bow seats (or solo seats) are also available as an option. These allow you to trim your canoe for different loads.

Fabric and Colour

Fabric and Colour Options

Carbon-tec

One of Souris River’s alternative options to regular Kevlar construction is our carbon fibre canoe.

If you are looking for a canoe with a stunningly rich, charcoal finish that weighs even less than pure Kevlar, this may be your ride.

Carbon-Tec Kevlar/Graphite CanoeCarbon (graphite) fibre is only marginally less durable than Kevlar and creates a hull that’s a little stiffer than Kevlar. While there are some concerns with our competitors’ carbon hulls being a little on the brittle side, ours is not. Epoxy resin makes our canoes significantly tougher, and having Kevlar backing up our carbon outer fabric ensures that you needn’t be concerned about durability. Carbon fibre fabrics are more expensive than Kevlar but, if you want the ultimate in lightweight strength, the additional cost is well worth it.

Woven Color

Imagine a green canoe which, when impacted, doesn’t have its colour scrape off or flake off, as so often happens with gel-coated and painted canoes. The reason this doesn’t happen with the woven colour canoe is because our colours are enclosed within the laminate. The outer layer is actually a coloured fabric.

    Souris River Kevlar Canoe Colours

This unique idea from Souris River Canoes eliminates the six to eight extra pounds of weight our competitors must add to their canoe hulls to provide a colour option.

Our competitors’ gel-coated or painted canoes give you an attractive show-room finish, but this benefit hardly justifies the sacrifices made so that those canoes can still be “ultra-light”. The most common tradeoff is giving up fabric strength to compensate for the weight of the gel-coat. Most other manufacturers build their ultra-light canoes with one and even two fewer layers of fabric than you’ll find in a Souris River Canoe.

Souris River uses four layers of fabric in every canoe we build and that’s four full non-seamed layers everywhere, bottom and sides. As a result, our woven color canoes are beautiful and lightweight and strong. They are much more resilient than gel coated canoes because, apart from being heavy, gel-coat is also brittle and when impacted will often star-crack and peel off. This won’t happen to a woven color hull as a Souris River Canoe woven color will simply flex and bounce away on impact. Surprisingly, many scratches will become less visible or virtually disappear when wiped with a rag and a bit of common urethane varnish.

Our woven color canoes are all manufactured using epoxy resin as the bonding agent, so they possess the same incredible toughness as you’ll find in our clear models.

Le Tigre

Le Tigre Design - Souris River Kevlar CanoeOur most popular selling canoe colour in the last few years has been our Le Tigre design. Unique to Souris River Canoes, this innovative pattern simply exceeded all of our expectations in customer appeal since its introduction in early 2000. The striped black and gold Kevlar with its unique logo can be seen everywhere canoes are paddled these days. In construction, a Le Tigre is identical to our conventional Kevlar hull in all ways. The pattern on the outer layer of cloth is what gives Le Tigre its distinctive appearance. Check one out at your nearest Souris River Canoes dealer. We’re sure you will love the cosmetic effect. The incredible canoe beneath is your bonus.

Canoe Profiles

    Souris River Kevlar Canoe Profiles

“Rocker” refers to the hull profile from end-to-end, whether straight or curved. It affects turning and tracking. Hull shape affects stability. A fl at bottom is stable in calm water, while a rounded hull sacrifi ces initial stability to improve wave handling qualities.

Materials and Construction

Kevlar Canoes

All Kevlar canoes are not created equal.

Kevlar is a synthetic woven fabric famous for its toughness and durability. It is best known for its applications within the aerospace industry and its bullet-stopping characteristics in police and military protective vests.

Canoe Trip with a Souris River CanoeKevlar is surprisingly light-weight compared to fiberglass and several other similar fabrics. What most people don’t realize is that the toughness of a canoe made with Kevlar depends critically on the type of resin used in the hull construction.

Virtually all other manufacturers use polyester or vinylester-based resins. Souris River Canoes uses epoxy, by far the strongest of all resins, in all of our canoe hulls.

Epoxy is more expensive than the other two, but the real reason so few manufacturers use it is that it is very temperamental and difficult to work with. It requires more time and care to produce an epoxy hull but the result is truly worth the effort. Souris River Canoes builds a Kevlar/epoxy canoe that, pound for pound, is the toughest Kevlar canoe on the market today.

Flexible Rib System

Souris River Canoes spent several years experimenting with various ways to stiffen the bottom of our canoe hulls. Conventional wisdom suggested a highly rigid structure as demanded by most elite canoe racers. Under their paddling conditions this was an important feature.

We wisely decided we would not build canoes for racing, but preferred addressing the needs of the canoe tripping and recreational paddling community.

Souris River Canoes Flexibile Rib System - revolutionary canoe hull construction that has just enough flex to eliminate the usage hazards yet still be stiff enough to prevent unwanted flexing under even the most severe wave action! As this type of paddling often encounters submerged rocks and logs, a rigid canoe bottom is no longer an advantage, quite the contrary as a matter of fact. A bottom with no give to it tends to crack or puncture when bridged or impacted. The obvious solution to this problem was to construct a hull that had just enough flex to eliminate the above hazards yet still be stiff enough to prevent unwanted flexing under even the most severe wave action one might encounter in flat water paddling.

Souris River Canoes has evolved a flexible rib system that has revolutionized the design of wilderness tripping canoes.

To the great surprise of the critics who steadfastly held to their racing design concepts of canoe hull construction, the flexible rib system has been a huge success. The frequency of crack or puncture repair to the bottom of Souris River Canoes is but a fraction of what you will find on the market’s rigid bottom designs. Our Flexible Rib System isn’t by any means indestructible, but it’s about as good as it gets!

Duralite

Duralite Canoe by Souris River CanoesOur search for a less expensive alternative to our Kevlar hulls resulted in a laminate which we call Duralite*. This fabric is a hybrid mix of some very strong, resilient fibre strands.

Although less costly, Duralite provides near-Kevlar performance. In fact, a Souris River Canoe made of Duralite is stronger than many of our competitors’ canoes made of Kevlar!

Duralite creates a hull that is admittedly a little heavier than Kevlar. Other than that, paddlers will find little or no difference between the two products’ performance on the water. With hundreds of Duralite canoes in outfitter service, there is no doubt about its performance.

Trailhead Prospector

Souris River Trailhead Prospector Kevlar Canoe - Ledgendary design with state-of-the art materials offers improved manoeuverability in river/creek travel, yet retains its open water credentials with little compromise.

In collaboration with Trailhead Ottawa, one of Canada’s premier outfitters and suppliers of wilderness equipment, Souris River Canoes builds a Prospector 16’ canoe.

This Trailhead model is a design made famous from the wood-canvas era of Bill Mason. Our modification incorporates the very best of the original Prospectors. The rocker makes for improved manoeuverability in river/creek travel. It retains its open water credentials with little compromise.

If you have ever experienced the nostalgic flush of imagining yourself plying the wilderness waters in a canoe of legendary design, try a Souris River Trailhead Prospector. The design is legendary; the materials are state-of-the-art.

Skeena

Souris River Canoes - Skeena Kevlar Canoe - an innovative whitewater tripping model, that performs extremely well in whitewater yet cruises effortlessly on flat water.

Recently Souris River Canoes combined our designing knowledge with that of Gary McGuffin, renowned adventure photographer, and SkipIzon, a world class canoe and rowing shell designer. The result of this collaboration is the Skeena, an innovative whitewater tripping model, that performs extremely well in whitewater yet cruises effortlessly on flat water.

As Souris River has the well deserved reputation as builder of the most resilent canoe hulls in the ultra-lite market, the next logical step was to test our expertise in the world of whitewater canoes. Our whitewater expedition layup consists of our tough epoxy resin combined with Kevlar, polyester cloth and other fabrics.

The Skeena 16 has finally emerged and initial trial results have proven to be quite amazing. Those who believed that no composite canoe could stand up to wild river conditions now need to rethink that premise. Clearly there is a place for such a boat. It may never take the place of Royalex in extreme
whitewater, but it clearly has a niche where combination usage exists.

Not only will it survive whitewater abuse, but it will prove to be a much better paddling canoe on the rest of the river and out across the lakes as well.

The Skeena will be especially appreciated when you have to pick it up on the portages and place it on your shoulders. The Skeena may be just a shade over 16 1/2 feet but it is a hefty hull in many ways except in weight. At 65 pounds, it is upwards of 20 pounds lighter than a comparable plastic
    hull.

This canoe will undoubtedly raise some eyebrows and generate interest among whitewater enthusiasts. We’re excited about where the Skeena will take us.

    Souris River Skeena Specifications

    Length - 16’ 8”

    Weight:
    -50 lbs. (Kevlar® flatwater layup)
    -65 lbs. (Kevlar® whitewater

Souris River Canoes - Wilderness 18 Kevlar - Added speed for experienced paddlers. Outfitters and park wardens alike, both in Canada and the U.S., swear by this canoe. It is deep as well as sleek and handles rough water well, even when heavily loaded.

The Wilderness 18 was designed by Keith Robinson to give the more experienced paddler some added water speed while still retaining load capacity and stability. While we believe the needs of novice paddlers are best served in our Quetico line of canoes, we find many experienced trippers absolutely love the Wilderness 18.

Outfitters and park wardens alike, both in Canada and the U.S., swear by this canoe. It is deep as well as sleek and handles rough water well, even when heavily loaded. If you’ve earned your share of callouses at the end of a paddle and would like to arrive a little faster, this may be the canoe that will get you there.

Souris River Canoes - Quetico 18.5 Kevlar Canoe - In demand by families and outfitters for a larger capacity canoe. Even when heavily loaded, this canoe is easy to paddle. When it comes time to portage, you’ll be impressed with how light it is.

We have experienced an increased demand by families and outfitters for a larger capacity canoe. Not only does the Quetico 18.5 allow for high capacity loading, but it retains amazing stability and handling characteristics.

Even when heavily loaded, this canoe is easy to paddle.

When it comes time to portage, you’ll be impressed with how light it is. Other canoes on the market with the Quetico 18.5’s capacity and performance do so with a ridiculous increase in overall length. This equates to more handling difficulties both on water and while threading your way through the woods on a portage.

The vast majority of Quetico 18.5s are outfitted with three seats.

Souris River Canoes - Quetico 17 Kevlar Canoe. The ultimate wilderness tripping canoe. Ultra-light, incredibly tough and very stable, they handle like a dream under any load conditions.

Following its introduction in the spring of 2000, the Quetico 17 very quickly became recognized as the ultimate wilderness tripping canoe. If you paddle the wild places in Canada and the U.S., you will find dozens of them. That’s no accident!

These canoes are ultra-light, incredibly tough and very stable.

They handle like a dream under any load conditions. When you get caught paddling hard into the face of a headwind, you’ll be very glad you’re paddling a Quetico 17. It rides high on the waves and takes in very little water over the gunwales, a trait you’ll be sure to appreciate if you’ve ever paddled one of our competitors’ “lowrider” designs in this situation.

We have THE canoe to best suits your needs!
Le Tigre

Souris River Canoes was originated in September 1985 by Keith Robinson. The first Manufacturing facility was located on the banks of the Souris River. The company continued in Souris until it moved in July 1992 to Atikokan, Ontario. Atikokan was chosen mostly for its close proximity to Quetico Park which encompasses some of the most beautiful canoeing in the world.

Carbon TecFrom the beginning, much time and energy was spent on research and development. The focus was on trying to find materials and a resin and stiffening system that would produce an incredibly lightweight and tough canoe. Like all good research work, the process has required a great deal of time, patience, and perseverance but these efforts have resulted in some astonishing discoveries: the development of R.E.S. Technology®, Kevlar®/Epoxy, Duralight®, and a revolutionary Flexible Rib System for stiffening the hulls of our canoes.
